On returning to work

I didn’t see it coming. I returned to the office today to find my desk covered in blue streamers and Christmas lights. On the wall outside my desk was a sign that read “It’s A Boy.”

They got me. Whitney and Amanda. Fellow writers. Out of their head decorators. Thoughtful people. I had to tear through streamers to get to my computer, which was also knotted in streamers. So were my coffee mug, my chair, and even my cabinets.

Amanda, Whitney, if you’re out there reading this: Thank you for the bath towels and the rattle for Slade and the Hot Wheels for Eli. And rest assured, ladies, that I’m already scheming. You know I know your birth dates. And you know that no good deed goes unpunished.

Seeing my desk coated in blue was a better surprise than the time I came back from vacation to find my stuff boxed up and an actual pink slip pinned to my chair. If I remember right, the reason for termination was noted as this: “Lesley is funny lookin. Plus he was gone on vacation too damn long.” My co-workers busted up as I stared at my empty desk with my mouth open that day. And they laughed and laughed when it took me hours to put things back together.

Just remember when you contemplate future decorating schemes that glitter and confetti were both pondered but cast aside.
